The Living Quarters

This is the home of our rats. Well where they live when they are confined to their quarters. It's a Jollyes' Super H cage, which is a really well built, affordable cage with plenty of space for the rats not to get in each other's way when they want to eat on their own.

You can see how small they look in the cage, that's a good thing. The dimensions are: 98cm wide * 50cm deep * 75cm high. Here is a link to a page that will help you calculate how much space to give your rats when purchasing a cage. You can use these as a guideline, but I think that if you can afford something even bigger, then go for it. That calculates the minimum sizes.

So did you know. Pine and cedar shavings are bad. Bad bad bad. Not only can they irritate their poor little nose and lungs but it can also cause internal damage, such as kidney and liver damage. Better be safe than sorry, say no to pine and cedar shavings! I read that spruce shavings aren't as bad, but still, better go for something 100% safe!

Rats don't smoke... Some of us do. The least we can do as smokers is provide the rats with a smoke-free environment. Don't smoke around your pets, please. Smoke outside, or in a different room, if you must. We have noticed since we've realised that smoke was bad for rats, that ours don't have as much respiratory problems since we stopped smoking in the house. (We only smoke in the kitchen with the door to the rest of the house closed, or we smoke outside)

You rats will need to have some space to stand up in the cage. So height is also important. They also love boxes, igloos and hammocks to sleep in and chill out. Rope bridges are good too to help them get round the cage and our rats love to climb so the ropes give them something to exercise on and play.

So... This is where our rats live...
